Time Penalties for Stage Defaults 2023

In the event of a runner starting but for any reason being unable to finish or complete a stage (DNF), a predetermined time penalty will be applied based on the race results from the previous year. The runner will be deemed to have covered the stage in a time equivalent to the slowest running time over that stage the previous year, regardless of category, plus 5 minutes.

Where a runner fails to start a stage for any reason (DNS), the team will be deemed to have covered the stage in a time equivalent to the slowest running time over that stage based on the previous year, regardless of category, plus 10 minutes.

The predetermined penalty times to be applied in either default instance are set out in the table below.

A default (DNF or DNS) must be noted on the hardcopy Timesheet. The default time will be attributed to the runner attracting the penalty. After any individual default, teams are free to start the next stage as soon as they are ready. The start time of the next stage will be zero and the timer(s) must be reset to zero.

If a nominated runner fails to turn up to run a stage, the team may insert a replacement runner subject to General Rule 23 (race day substitutions).

A team is allowed to default on up to 3 stages, after which they will be disqualified from the event. In the event of this happening, individual runners in that team who have successfully completed a stage, prior to disqualification, will still be eligible for stage awards and records.
